On Tuesday afternoon a federal appeals court affirmed Texas’ right to ban all medically unnecessary abortions.
In the ruling made by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday, the judge states precedent, “allows the state to restrict, for example, one’s right to peaceably assembly, to publicly worship, to travel, and even to leave one’s home. The right to abortion is no exception.” (Politico).
The Court of Appeals’ decision overturns an earlier ruling by a lower court that had originally blocked the abortion ban. Other states that have attempted to pass abortion bans but have failed include: Oklahoma, Ohio and Alabama. Kentucky and Indiana have also passed abortion bans but those have yet to be challenged in court.
