AOC Snaps After Opponent's Comments During Virtual Debate: 'Leave My Mom Out of It'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused her main Democratic primary opponent of breaching decorum during a virtual debate on Monday night, The New York Post reported.

Gloves off: Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera repeatedly went after Ocasio-Cortez during the hour-long event, which featured two other candidates vying for New York’s 14th congressional district seat.

At one point, Caruso-Cabrera referenced 2019 remarks made by Ocasio-Cortez’s mother, in which she said she moved to Florida to escape New York taxes.
  • “AOC says her family lives here. Her mother moved to Florida because the taxes are too high and my opponent, AOC, voted to raise taxes on New Yorkers,” Caruso-Cabrera said.
AOC fires back: Caruso-Cabrera’s attack prompted an indignant Ocasio-Cortez to tell her primary opponent, “Leave my mom out of it."
AOC’s mom rejects socialism: Speaking to the Daily Mail last year, Blanca Ocasio-Cortez revealed why she fled New York and said she didn’t raise her daughter to be a socialist.
  • “I lived in the New York area for most of my life but I started being unable to afford it. I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here,” the elder Ocasio-Cortez said.
  • She also added: “[AOC]  wasn’t raised to be a socialist. That’s not how Puerto Ricans are. That’s not what we do. She’s a democratic socialist, and it’s very different. They focus on working people’s needs.”
