Gloves off: Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera repeatedly went after Ocasio-Cortez during the hour-long event, which featured two other candidates vying for New York’s 14th congressional district seat.
At one point, Caruso-Cabrera referenced 2019 remarks made by Ocasio-Cortez’s mother, in which she said she moved to Florida to escape New York taxes.
- “AOC says her family lives here. Her mother moved to Florida because the taxes are too high and my opponent, AOC, voted to raise taxes on New Yorkers,” Caruso-Cabrera said.
- “I lived in the New York area for most of my life but I started being unable to afford it. I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here,” the elder Ocasio-Cortez said.
- She also added: “[AOC] wasn’t raised to be a socialist. That’s not how Puerto Ricans are. That’s not what we do. She’s a democratic socialist, and it’s very different. They focus on working people’s needs.”
