The leaders of the countries in the European Union decided to close down external borders to noncitizens in response to the coronavirus epidemic.
These border restrictions oppose the European Union’s free border structure, 19 of those countries have imposed strict internal border controls to slow down the spread of the virus.
However, major concerns have been raised that closing-down the internal borders of the EU would lead to a major catastrophe because no European country is self-sufficient. Each country depends on one another to supply goods, including the medical supplies necessary to assist patients who have been infected. Therefore, European leaders are urging each country to maintain the flow of goods open between internal borders.
